Turnaround Management as a First or Second Career

Turnaround Management Careers
We get many resumes a year from applicants looking to become turnaround management professionals. Most of these resumes are off the mark for the turnaround management profession.

To help people considering the turnaround management field, we decided to publish this web site, and give some practical advice for career changers and those just starting their careers.

What you need to be a turnaround management professional:
1. Experience Being a Consultant
2. An Understanding of Turnaround Management Techniques (See below)
3. Experience Turning Around Troubled Firms
4. Willingness to Travel

Please do not send turnaround firms a resume unless you have all of these skills and experiences. You are just wasting your money and time.

If you do not have these four skills, experiences and wishes, but you are serious about turnaround management as a career path, then we recommend that you start out small. Try to get some experience with your current employer and fix a troubled division or product line.

If you are already a consultant, find small firms or nonprofits in your area that you can help. While these will not be well-paid assignments, these will build up your resume for a position with a top turnaround management firm.

To get a good understanding of turnaround management techniques, we suggest that you get some training in the field. The best training is our colleague's The Insider Secrets to Saving Your Business: The Step-by-Step Turnaround Guide.

You can complete this self-study training at your home. After you have read (and reread) this manual, you will have knowledge of all the techniques necessary to fix troubled companies. This should be your first investment as your begin your restructuring consultant career.
